Statement by the Union of Arab Student Associations

Dear All:

I don't think the dictionary established words that can truly express the deep sympathy and sorrow that the UASA desires to express in light of Tuesday's events. Our Nation is paralyzed and is shocked. The Union of Arab Student Associations condemns these horrible acts. UASA would like to send its sincerest sympathy to the family and friends of the victims who innocently died by these inhumane acts. We hope that the truth will be revealed and the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be brought to justice.

UASA urges and supports all efforts from local to national Arab student associations to work closely with their campuses and communities to find ways to alleviate the pain and suffering, as well as to illustrate our sign of good faiths. Many campuses have already illustrated their eagerness through initiating blood drives, general forums, and providing a network of support for anyone (no matter creed, race, or religion). From Berkeley, UM, to UNC

Of course, there have been an increase of concern, regarding security issues among Arab American students. UASA understands these concerns and would like to extend its services to anyone. UASA urges all ASA to work closely with their campus administrators and authority to address their concerns. It is important that ASA's and others alike facilitate the importance of safety and awareness of the consequences of "guilt by association". It is highly imperative that Arab American highlight and parallel the experiences of Japanese Americans after Pearl Harbor. UASA does not want to see Arab  Americans, an innocent community, subjected to unjustified abuse when reports on these terrorist attacks are handled irresponsibly. Until the perpetrators are brought to justice, all media reports should be accurate, restrained and sensitive to all the communities who are suffering in this tragedy.

If any student would like to share their concerns, comment, or report any form of harassment or discrimination, please contact us at [email protected] or call us at 202-756-4102 x 3859.

In deep sympathy for the Nation and for all,

Mais Abousy
UASA Chairwomen
